BIO...
The Reuben James is two parts whiskey & one part heartache… A quartet hailing from upstate New York, the members of The Reuben James are a composite of diverse musical ideologies and spirits. Taking cues from bands such as Counting Crows and Over The Rhine, as well as maintaining a presence in the singer/songwriter traditions of Bob Dylan, Dan Bern, and Ryan Adams, their music blends folk, rock, and country, and is written and played with a passion, integrity, and intimacy you won’t forget.
The band has performed all over New York from Utica, to Binghamton, to Buffalo and reaching into the Boston area. In addition to performing at colleges, bars, clubs, and coffeeshops, the band is also a staple of many area festivals such as the Utica Monday Nite celebrations, The Saranac Brewery Thursday Nite Concert series, SUNY Geneseo’s Springfest, and the annual Mountain Jam festival.
The Reuben James has also shared the stage with underground sensation and Epic recording artist Howie Day, and DYS recording artist Fred Gillen Jr. In the summers of 2001 & 2002, the band was voted into WOUR’s Battle of the Bands competition. Listeners of 96.9 WOUR took part in voting for their favorite area bands, naming the band one of the four most popular acts in Central New York two years in a row. The group took home the $1000 prize both years.
As songwriters, members of The Reuben James are a force to be reckoned with. During the first half of 2002, Ryan Miller traveled through Ireland, playing pubs, the Witless Music Festival in Galway as a finalist in their Battle of the Bands and a live acoustic show on Galway Radio. He also was invited to play the “Unseen Sounds” series which showcased the best musicians in Galway.
Likewise, Jason Schnitt has logged countless hours in front of crowds small and large, relentlessly perfecting his craft. He has become a widely respected songwriter and performer throughout the northeast, and has garnered the admiration of his audiences and fellow musicians alike.
In 2003 the band began recording a multitude of new material which manifested itself in the form of an EP and the full length album “Radio Mystery Theater.” A collection of 14 tracks, Radio Mystery Theater contains songs about broken hearts, broken promises, broken cities, and broken guitars. It is the freedom found in a 4/4 beat, a banjo tango, or a ghost piano. Both records and other works by Miller & Schnitt are available through Telepathic Records.
Currently the band is putting together a tour of both electric and acoustic shows in the Northest and Canada. For booking electric nights or acoustic sets, please contact the band using the information below.
